The Reading for today is From RDC 43:1-2
Concerning the appointment of “one”:
“1a O hearken, ye elders of my church, and give ear to the words which I shall speak unto you: for, behold, verily, verily I say unto you, that ye have received a commandment for a law unto my church, through him whom I have appointed unto you, to receive commandments and revelations from my hand. 1b And this ye shall know assuredly, that there is none other appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations until he be taken, if he abide in me. 2a But verily, verily I say unto you, that none else shall be appointed unto this gift except it be through him, for if it be taken from him he shall not have power, except to appoint another in his stead; 2b and this shall be a law unto you, that ye receive not the teachings of any that shall come before you as revelations, or commandments; and this I give unto you, that you may not be deceived, that you may know they are not of me. 2c For verily I say unto you, that he that is ordained of me, shall come in at the gate and be ordained as I have told you before, to teach those revelations which you have received, and shall receive through him whom I have appointed”.
This appointment of Joseph Smith Jr. was recognized by the early church. It was recognized by the November 1831 conference which approved the revelations for publication as being of greater worth than the riches of the whole earth. It was recognized by revelation through Granville Hedrick in 1863 which speaks of Joseph Jr. as this one appointed of God to receive revelation….
The point of discord seems to come as to whether this appointment was continued in any of the remnants of the restored church. The LDS simply asserted that it was bound up in the apostles’ quorum and passed in that way to Brigham Young. Sidney, Rigdon and followers claimed that it was resident in him as the surviving member of the presidency. Alpheus Culter and James Strang made their claims based on other actions and words – real or mearely alledged - …
Later some proposed that this “office” as president of the high priesthood of Christ’s church was bound in the lineage of Joseph Jr. – and fell to his son Joseph III. These became the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ. In later years Joseph III’s grandson (Wallace B. Smith) abdicated his rights, here, and appointed Grant McMurray in his stead.
In 2017 some saints in Brazil were instructed by a heavenly messenger – Moroni – who informed them: “I, the Lord, have not changed; however, the Lineal priesthood was once again taken from among the communities of Latter-day Saints, with only one man worthy of bearing it. His name is Joseph Frederick Smith”.
In August 2018 a group of saints convened in conference to consider this enlightenment, and expressed their willingness to uphold brother Joseph F. Smith as receiving this promise and appointment of the Lord – if he was able to receive it through the High Priesthood, as did his progenitor.
In October of 2018, Joseph F. Smith received that promised gift of the high priesthood by the ordination of Mauricio Berger. In April 2019 Brother Joseph was thus ordained in this office as had Joseph Jr. and Joseph III and as promised through the heavenly messenger: “But his authorized apostles[Brigham Young et. al.] deliberately rejected the one who was called to preside in this place, and omitted the truth to the people who followed them, thus forsaking the spring of living waters resting upon his son, whose office now falls upon his chosen offspring, and chosen through his love for the Lord and his faithfulness to his commandments, Joseph Frederick Smith.
Holy Father In heaven, we praise thee, O God that thou art unchangeable from age to age, and that as this priesthood and promise has continued from age to age so has your love endured unto your people. Help us ever to take hold of this precious gift which has now been granted to thy people, and let us raise the standard of truth to all nations to thy name’s honor and glory, forever. So we ask in Jesus’s name. Amen.
